Brits ‘clueless’ about fish as they cannot inform haddock from cod – take quiz

A new study found that a shocking 53% of Brits are ‘clueless’ about fish, despite 67% chowing down on it at least once a week.

But how clued up are you? Are you just a guppy when it comes to your knowledge of all things aquatic? Or are you a fully-fledged sea cucumber? Do you know your plaice from your pollock, your trout from your tuna, or your salmon from sardines? You can find out where you stand by itching your curiosity and taking this quiz by Fish Said Fred.

Chilled fish brand spokesperson Lisa Cowell revealed: “Despite its popularity, many consumers don’t know a great deal about fish. And they can be put off by misconceptions around cooking time and how to serve it.”

“But as the study shows, 56% believe they should enjoy more fish than they currently do. So, we’re on a mission to help people become more ‘fish confident’ by making fish quick, easy, simple and tasty for them to cook.”

The research discovered that a significant number of Brits couldn’t even correctly identify common fish. Over three quarters of participants were perplexed by haddock (78%), while 62% wouldn’t recognise a cod if it jumped onto their dinner plate.

This is quite surprising considering these two species are most loved by those who took part in the study – cod (52%), salmon (46%), tuna (41%) and haddock (36%).

But it’s not just identifying the different species which those polled struggle with. According to a study, half of us find it a right pain to whip up something fancy with fish.

And let’s not even talk about the prep 18% say it’s just too much faff, while 21% don’t feel brave enough to try cooking different types of fish.

But get this a massive 69% of folks say they’re stuck for ideas and know-how when it comes to fishy dishes. Despite all this confusion, a solid 90% of those surveyed love a bit of seafood on their plates.

And hey, we might not be clued up on our fish facts, but we’re all about that sustainable life 82% think it’s super important that our seafood is sourced without harming the planet.
