Rory McIlroy spent £10m on plans for brand spanking new house earlier than ‘bombshell’ break up from spouse
Rory McIlroy reportedly spent at least £10million on plans for a new home before his ‘bombshell’ divorce from his wife of seven years.
The superstar golfer filed for divorce from his wife, Erica Stoll, and mother of their three-year-old daughter, Poppy, on the eve of the US PGA Championship, ending their 12-year relationship. The 35-year-old’s filed petition did not reveal a reason for the split, but said their marriage was “irretrievably broken”.
McIlroy was spotted earlier this week practising for the US PGA Championship at Valhalla in Kentucky for the first time without his wedding ring. The breakdown of their marriage is said to be a ‘bombshell’ to those close to the couple, as he had bought a plot of land in Wentworth, Surrey, for a new home to be built to their specifications.

The Northern Irishman is believed to already have a home in the London area and one in Holywood, Northern Ireland, close to where he grew up. But a new manor for the PGA star, who is worth around £200million, was expected to be built in Surrey.
A source from The Sun said: “Rory could easily have seen the family’s future at Wentworth and in London — at least up until recently.

“He had spent between £10million and £14million on plans for the home at Wentworth, which he was having built to their specifications.
“Friends of his like the golfers Justin Rose and Ernie Els are based there and it is the home of European golf. That’s partly why the news of his divorce was a complete bombshell to people who know Rory.
“Anyone who saw him with Erica at the Players Championship in March would have thought everything was hunky dory — but clearly that was not the case. That is why people have been so blindsided by this.”

McIlroy was previously engaged to tennis star Caroline Wozniacki but kindled a romance with Stoll following their split.
The pair wed in 2017 and documents filed in the US reportedly reveal the couple have agreed to “shared parental responsibility” for Poppy.
