‘Sad-looking’ UK seaside slammed as ‘dump’ that ‘turns your mind to sludge’
Sandown Beach on the Isle of Wight, once a jewel in the crown of British seaside destinations, has been blasted by visitors as a “dump” after years of “neglect”.
Despite having once been touted as the island’s most iconic beach, Sandown is now a shadow of its former glory. Holidaymakers have moaned about its derelict shops and rundown appearance.
TripAdvisor reviews paint a grim picture of the former tourist magnet, with many calling for a much-needed revamp – despite the “extortionate” cost of trips to and from the island.

While local guides describe Sandown as a classic ‘bucket and spade’ beach holiday destination, visitors complain there’s little to do, with some locals even leaving “before their brains turn to sludge.”
One scathing review read: “Shops boarded up, pot holes everywhere, buildings in disrepair, entry prices have shot up, camp sites no longer accepting touring caravans. Its very sad to look at. Just one visit your whole life would do you, no need to come back again. People are moving off before their brains turn to sludge.”
Despite the criticism, Sandown was praised for its “amazing” views. However one visitor claimed their “lovely weekend” was ruined by waste on the beach and vowed to return – but steer clear of the sea. Another two-star review bluntly labelled Sandown a “dump like most of the island.”
Even some five-star reviews on TripAdvisor pointed out the area had little to do. A visitor described it as a “wonderful” place for a walk, yet felt there was something missing. They said: “Sadly so many rundown buildings we didn’t choose to explore the town. Lovely area for walking to Shanklin.”
Despite this, Sandown Beach still gets its fair share of positive feedback, with one review applauding the “lovely sandy beach”.
Meanwhile another holidaymaker wrote: “Super beach for a swim. Not too busy and plenty of eateries opposite for food and drinks afterwards. We loved our mini break here! ” A third fan added: “What a really lovely beach, the views are amazing. things to do are plenty and not too expensive either. loved it.”
