Arne Slot’s first phrases after revealing he is signed a contract with Liverpool

Arne Slot has revealed he’s signed a contract to take over from Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.

Klopp, 56, will leave Merseyside at the end of the season – announcing his decision back in January. And Liverpool have since been linked with a slew of managers, including Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso and Feyenoord’s Slot.

Slot has now confirmed he will be taking the hot seat at Anfield next season. “I can confirm that I will become the trainer there next year,” Slot told a press conference on Friday afternoon.

“Until now I was not thinking about this being the build up to my last match, but that starts coming now. At the beginning of the week you are thinking about training and those kind of things. But the feeling gets stronger now.

“That is why I’m a little bit late now [for the news conference], because I wanted to say goodbye to some people personally and take time for them, more then just shaking hands.

“So yeah, the feeling grows. I understand that good results help, but it is very nice to feel that people really are thinking it’s a pity that I’m leaving. You can say that with words, but you can feel it if people truly think that way. That does mean a lot to me.”

Slot is highly regarded in his native Netherlands – where he has managed Cambuur, AZ and most recently Feyenoord. It was at the Rotterdam-based giants where he won his only Eredivisie title.

According to ESPN, Slot is planning to make Sipke Hulshoff, his assistant at Feyenoord, the first appointment to his backroom staff at Liverpool.

Klopp had his final press conference on Friday, and he admitted: “It will be so hard to say goodbye. I loved everything about this place.

“I take memories with me, fantastic memories. Friendships forever. When time slips through your fingers, you only realise later on. I don’t think it was a quick nine years. We used absolutely everything, tried to make the best of everything and enjoy it as much as possible.

“I will not forget a day in that time because I met the best people I ever met and the best club I could have imagined in a wonderful, very special city.”
