Scandals of feminine lecturers’ intercourse with pupils as consultants clarify why they do it

You only have to type in the words ‘female teacher’ on Google to be met with a wave of stories about young pupils being preyed upon.

The latest example is a teacher at a Greater Manchester school who stood trial this month after being accused of having sex with two teenage boys. Rebecca Joynes, who was found guilty of a string of sex offences on Friday (May 17), allegedly laughed and told one teen to “shut up” when they said: “I’m not old enough.”

Manchester Crown Court heard how the 30-year-old, who had a baby with a teenage boy, made the joke after picking up the pupil in her Audi before taking him to her home for sex.

Rebecca Joynes had pled not guilty to the offences

And after a two-week trial, she was convicted of four counts of sexual activity with a child and two counts of sexual activity with a child by a person in a position of trust. She will be sentenced at a later date.

In light of this recent case, we’ve looked at some experts’ theories on just why teachers seek sexual relations with pupils.

The expert view

A woman who has conducted studies on the topic is Andrea Darling, of the criminology department at Durham University. One of her pieces was published by The Conversation and in it, she suggests some teachers become “predatory paedophiles” because of loneliness and relationship problems.

She wrote: “Unlike other sex offenders, they do not specifically enter their professions to access children. Instead, my research has found that many (though not all) of these women appear to abuse because of their own unmet intimacy needs resulting from relationship problems and feelings of loneliness, for example.

Andrea Darling said the teachers are generally more affluent

“These women are also different from other female sex offenders in that they are generally older, more affluent, have better social skills and less issues with substance abuse. Their behaviour is also to some extent influenced by the very situations they are also working in.”

Another expert, Dr Stuart Bassman, spoke to Fox19 about how some teachers are attracted to the innocence of youth and he also said in some cases, they are suffering emotionally.

He said: “There is a sense of power and control. There is a sense of being attracted to innocence. There is an extent where a person is emotionally suffering and they seek out the comfort of another person and they do so in a very destructive way.

“It could have been that something like that happened to them or in a sense they don’t realise the harm, and in their distorted thinking they rationalise and justify that.”

And psychiatrist Dr Domenick Sportelli told Fox News that the allure of power was the fundamental reason for teachers bedding students.

He said: “Its roots are based on the ‘power’ that the female teacher has, a position of dominance and control. Perhaps the teacher is experiencing personal loneliness, dissatisfaction with her current relationships, feels the need for revenge, is experiencing lust or perhaps believes it is ‘true love’.

“In many cases, there is a history of sexual and or psychological abuse towards the perpetrator. Many psychiatric pathologies can lead to this type of behaviour including mood disorders, personality disorders and prior sexual trauma.”

Cases that rocked the UK

Kandice Barber

Disgraced teacher Kandice Barber was jailed in 2021 after having sex with a 15-year-old pupil in a field. The predator also sent the teen topless pictures on Snapchat.

The mum-of-three, from Buckinghamshire, wrote in one sordid text: “You cannot make me blush when I am teaching now, poker-face.”

She was convicted of one count of causing or inciting a child to engage in a sexual activity and was hit with a sentence of six years and two months.

The judge described her as “beyond despicable” and her husband, Daniel, eventually left her after initially standing by her.

Earlier this year, the 37-year-old was released from prison halfway through her sentence. During her time inside, she even reportedly had a fling with fraudster Jay Delaney.

Fatinah Hossain

Fatinah Hossain used to call herself “princess” before she was jailed in 2021 for having sex with a 14-year-old male student. The teacher, from Sussex, even bragged to her pals that her ‘horny’ pupils flirted with her in school.

The victim tried to end the illegal relationship – only for Hossain to say she was pregnant and she later tried to pay him off to get the charges dropped.

She had been working as a teaching assistant and cover teacher at a school in Horsham when the illegal relationship began.

Hossain was charged with perverting the course of justice along with one count of sexual activity with the boy while in a position of trust. She is now a registered sex offender and was jailed for five years and four months.

Aimee Jones

Former maths teacher Aimee Jones was caged in November 2021 for sexually touching a 15-year-old pupil in her car.

Jones, from Richmond, North Yorkshire, received an eight-month sentence after admitting to engaging in sexual activity with a girl between the age of 13 and 17.

She approached the teenager at school and told her she was bisexual before admitting she had feelings for her. Her social worker husband, Philip, later reported her to the police after he uncovered the illegal relationship.

And, after she was sentenced, Judge Smith said: “Every parent who sends their child to school expects them to be kept safe by those into whose care they entrust their child.”
