Warning as ‘vomiting bug’ sweeps UK and Brits urged to not go to work or faculty

Brits are being advised to stay put as norovirus cases surge across the nation, with a sharp increase in recent weeks.

Health authorities have raised the alarm, with the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) issuing an urgent alert about the rise in norovirus infections.

The UKHSA reports that levels of the highly infectious virus remain unusually high for this time of year and haven’t shown the expected spring decline.

The dreaded winter vomiting bug is wreaking havoc, causing severe diarrhoea and vomiting outbreaks. In a concerning trend, confirmed norovirus cases are a shocking 75% above the five-year average, the health body has disclosed, according to the Express.

Experts speculate the post-Covid landscape and May’s chilly weather may be contributing factors to the stubborn persistence of the bug. To curb the spread, those affected by the illness are being urged to maintain good hygiene and avoid going into work.

Amy Douglas, Norovirus Epidemiologist at UKHSA, stated: “Norovirus levels were higher in April than we would usually see at this time of year and have been increasing. This is likely due to a combination of factors, but the colder weather we have had won’t have helped.

“If you’re suffering from diarrhoea and vomiting, it’s crucial to avoid spreading the infection. Stay away from work, school or nursery until 48 hours after your symptoms have ceased and refrain from preparing food for others during this period. If you’re feeling poorly, steer clear of visiting individuals in hospitals and care homes to prevent passing on the infection.

“Regular hand washing with soap and warm water, along with using bleach-based products for cleaning surfaces, can help halt the spread of infections. Don’t solely rely on alcohol gels as they don’t kill norovirus.”

Earlier today, reports emerged of a cruise ship riddled with hundreds of Norovirus cases being put under lockdown while health authorities investigate. Numerous passengers have recounted their nightmarish experiences over the past weeks since embarking on the PandO Ventura from Southampton.

Holidaymakers have reported severe bouts of illness, toilets “smothered in excrement”, and criticised the cruise ship company for its “appalling management” of the situation. The outbreak reportedly began six weeks ago, during which several cruises have proceeded.
