Brits face vacation chaos as Spanish locals threaten airport protest over booze

Brit holidaymakers could face travel chaos to Majorca this summer after local activists threatened to collapse the Spanish island’s airport.

The radical tactic was mentioned at a “citizen’s assembly” on Friday, May 17, in the inland of town of Sineu where the association of “Less Tourisim, More Life” discussed to prepare an anti-tourist protest at Palma Airport – one of the busiest in Europe during peak summer months.

The plan involves massing cars outside the airport and causing traffic gridlock with rapturous applause. The proposed demonstration is not confirmed but activists said they are discussing the legal implications if they were to go ahead.

They also suggested setting up a fund to pay fines levied by the authorities. Another plan is to give tourists an “intense summer” by flocking to the island hotels in a bid to disrupt holidaymakers and make their demands heard.

This comes after British and German tourists ignoring Majorca’s crackdown on alcohol despite ramping up efforts to curb rowdy behaviour by threatening street-drinkers with fines of up to £1,300, banning party boats from getting close to tourist hotspot and closing shops that sell alcohol after 9.30pm.

Tourists are also at risk of being fined up to £500 for walking around the island topless or in a bikini.

Anti-tourist graffit also popped up across the island saying “Tourist and Digital Nomad, Go Home!” while a separate protest against “tourist overcrowding” will take place next Saturday.

Locals from other Balearic islands have echoed similar complaints, an activist group called Prou Eivissa (Enough Ibiza) has asked locals to make a sand on May 24 and campagin for further restrictions on tourists visiting the island.

Last summer, fed-up locals spotted chaotic Brits fighting and passing out in the street. Miguel Pascual, who lives in the town, told Majorca Bulletin that one tipsy tourist even used his garden as a toilet.

“I yelled at him to get out of the garden and when he turned round, I saw that his pants were full of faeces,” he said.

There were also incidents that drunken tourists wearing almost nothing strolled along the promenade.
