Man City break Arsenal’s hearts and win a fourth Premier League on the bounce

Manchester City are in a league of their own – they’re breaking new ground and creating their own history.

Never has a Premier League side won four titles in-a-row, until Sunday afternoon. Pep Guardiola took his side to the heights that even the great Manchester United sides under Sir Alex Ferguson never managed to touch.

Arsenal went into their clash with Everton dreaming of a first title in two decades – but they needed a helping hand from West Ham. In truth, in Manchester, it was never really a contest, City didn’t have to move out of first gear.

Phil Foden, Guardiola’s jewel in his Premier League crown, was outstanding yet again – netting twice to quell any nerves in the blue half of Manchester.

Wave after wave of light blue crashed towards the West Ham goal. City queued up to score more. Even defender Manuel Akanji was trying his luck from long range. It was all a bit embarrassing.

It’s the fourth time in four seasons Pep Guardiola has conquered England

And even when Mohammed Kudus pulled one back with a spectacular overhead kick before half time, nothing was going to change. Rodri made it 3-1 on the hour mark with a side-footed finish which Alphonse Areola should have saved – and that was that.

It didn’t take long for the Poznan to make an appearance after Rodri rolled the ball home.

And the City fans were already in the party atmosphere with 20 minutes still left on the clock.

Sunday afternoon lacked the drama of Sergio Aguero’s heart-stopping winner against QPR and Ilkay Gundogan’s masterpiece against Aston Villa two years ago. City’s fans might have appreciated that – they’ve seen their side do it the hard way one too many times.

City are still the kings of English football – and as long as Guardiola remains at the Etihad it’s difficult to see who can knock him off his throne.

Arsenal have been almost faultless this campaign – even Guardiola’s side were unable to workout the puzzle on how to unlock their defence. Mikel Arteta’s side will come again, and he now has the summer to work out how to stop the Premier League juggernauts.

How City keep doing it, season after season, is one of the most wonderful mysteries of the domestic game. The numbers surrounding this remarkable team are almost impossible to compute.

City have now gone 44 games unbeaten at home in all competitions, and are the only team not to lose in the league on home soil this season.

Rodri is now unbeaten in his last 74 games for City, winning 58 of them, while Haaland has scored 63 goals in 66 league matches since signing.

So Guardiola has added another layer to his legacy. What he’s now won would be more than enough for most managers, but he is not like the rest.

He will be back next season on another mission to do it all again – and good luck to all those who happen to get in his way.
