Oleksandr Usyk rushed to hospital with ‘damaged jaw’ after Tyson Fury combat

Oleksandr Usyk was reportedly rushed off to a Saudi Arabian hospital with a suspected broken jaw after triumphing over Tyson Fury to become the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world.

The Ukrainian and Fury battled it out for 12 thrilling rounds at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh on Saturday night, with Usyk emerging victorious thanks to a split decision from the judges.

Fury tried to rattle his opponent right from the get-go, pulling faces inside the ring and playing up to the captivated crowd. The Gypsy King managed to land a series of significant punches.

However, Usyk held his own, landing plenty of his own shots, before turning the tables as the match progressed.

In the later stages, the Ukrainian took the fight to Fury and gave his younger adversary a thrashing in the ninth round, landing punch after punch. Fury staggered from rope to rope, visibly shaken and dazed, looking like he was about to hit the deck.

But the 35-year-old somehow managed to stay upright and continued to throw solid punches in the final three rounds, reports the Express.

The bout was gripping from beginning to end and remained a close contest right up until the final bell. And Usyk was ultimately declared the winner moments after the face-off had concluded.

Both fighters were left looking worse for wear post-bout, with ESPN reporting that Usyk was taken to hospital for an MRI scan amid fears of a broken jaw. The 37-year-old warrior only started feeling the pain in his jaw after the final bell had rung and got a quick check-up before returning to fulfil his media obligations.

Fury didn’t shy away from talking about Usyk’s injury during his presser, saying: “We’ve just had a fight. As you can see in my face, I’m pretty busted up. And he’s gone to hospital with a broken jaw, and he’s pretty busted too. We punched the f*** out of each other for 12 rounds there.”

Usyk’s promoter Alexander Krassyuk faced the press, adding that his fighter needed four stitches above his right eye and was undergoing a jaw scan.

Krassyuk also dropped the bombshell that Usyk is game for a rematch come October and said that Usyk was itching to join the press conference. “He said he doesn’t want to go to the hospital, he wants to come to the press conference,” Krassyuk revealed.

“But the doctor insisted he has to go. He insists so I have to be here on his behalf.”

After getting checked out, Usyk made his way back to the Kingdom Arena, ready to share his take on what was undoubtedly an unforgettable night in the Middle East.
