Greggs followers cannot include pleasure as chain teases new merchandise with emoji riddle

Greggs makes some of the most iconic pastry products ever – but they’re also known for their ‘elite’ sandwiches.

And it turns out they’ve got a surprise up their sleeve for fans of fish, as they’re set to launch a whole new product, and they’ve teased it on their X, formerly Twitter, account to get fans guessing what’s coming up on the menu.

Posting a baffling emoji riddle, Greggs left yum yum-lovers confused and desperate to know whether their guesses were indeed correct. They posted a fish emoji, a finger-pointing emoji, and a sandwich emoji, leaving many questioning what the new item was going to be.

If you guessed that Greggs would be launching a fish finger sandwich, you’d be right, but if you’re not based in the North East, it’s bad news as that’s where the trial will be taking place for the butty, which starts Thursday, May 23.

The Fish Finger Sandwich at Greggs is made from a lightly battered cod fillet fish, dressed with iceberg lettuce inside a soft-corned top roll, and it will be available with a choice of either ketchup or mayo. However, if you’re not a fan of a roll, then there’s a wrap alternative with your name on it.

On social media, someone said that the fish finger sandwich sounded like the “dream”, with another saying it sounded “banging”. Responding to the emoji riddle on X, someone said: “Elite if true”. The fish finger sandwich will set you back from £3.90, whereas the wrap is priced from £3.70.

The stores the product will trial at are as follows:

  1. Gateshead, G109 Trinity Square
  2. Longbenton, Quorum Retail Parade
  3. Washington, U3B Peel Retail Park
  4. Newcastle, Sandy Lane Drive Thru
  5. Sunderland, U4 Salterfen Park
  6. Washington, U4 Parsons Rd Industrial Estate
  7. Bowburn, Integra 61 Drive Thru
  8. Horden, U4 Cotsford Lane
  9. Blaydon, Bridge Street
  10. Greggs @ Primark Northumberland Street

Others begged for their old favourite items to make a return to shelves, pleading with Greggs to reinstate the prawn mayo baguette, meat and potato pie, steak and cheese roll, amongst other tasty treats.
