‘I went boozing with Alan Brazil – I did not imagine my eyes at begin of the day’

Motorsport legend Eddie Jordan has detailed a boozy day out with talkSPORT favourite Alan Brazil.

The former Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur striker is a household name to sports fans through hosting the Breakfast Show. Brazil’s light-hearted approach to the day’s biggest headlines has been a staple for many listeners since being hired in 2000.

Away from the radio studio, Brazil is renowned for his love of horse racing and drinking sessions with several of his co-hosts. In an interview with the beloved radio host, Formula One legend Eddie Jordan recalled once catching up with Brazil in a pub during the Cheltenham Festival and was left shocked by the first order of the day.

“We decided we’d meet up at about 11 o’clock, which is quite early for a horse race in Cheltenham,” Jordan said on his Formula for Success podcast. “We commandeered this table in the middle of Cheltenham.

“I saw this table was 16, 18 pints of Guinness, all freshly pulled and it looked absolutely majestic. And I’m saying, ‘Alan have you got a lot of pals coming?’” Interjecting Jordan’s story, Brazil replied: “It was like a Monet painting, wasn’t it?”

The F1 legend continued: “The Monet painting soon disappeared because he consumed most of them. He said to me, ‘No, I don’t have any friends, they’re for us.’ Leaping to his defence, Brazil explained: “That’s before the rush comes in.”

After listening to the pair, Jordan’s co-host David Coulthard responded: “[Eddie Jordan’s] not used to buying drink, you see. He’s used to people supplying it.

“Funny you should say that, I don’t think he bought that day,” Brazil told Coulthard, leading a chuckling Jordan to reply, “Actually, I probably didn’t!”

Brazil’s love of Cheltenham and poor time-keeping have been long-standing running jokes on his talkSPOPRT show. In March, the broadcaster did not turn up for his show on the final day of the Cheltenham Festival. A theory for him being AWOL quickly emerged after being spotted in a bar the previous day, but Brazil quickly denied the speculation.

“There was no massive drinks bender,” he told the Daily Mail. “I was just tired after coming down here on Sunday. It’s been a long week. Also my knee is playing up after a lot of walking about. There’s a lot of walking about needs done here with so many people to meet.”
