Wayne Rooney ‘set for managerial return’ as followers say ‘that is them happening’
Wayne Rooney is set to return to football management with Plymouth Argyle.
The Manchester United and England icon was last in the dugout at Birmingham City, but the ill-fated spell in the Midlands ended with him being sacked in January. The 38-year-old only spent four months at the Championship club, after being hired in October.
The ex-Everton forward has since been working as a pundit for Sky Sports and ITV, but has repeatedly spoken of his desire to return to coaching. And now it looks like he’s going to get his chance with another side in the second tier.

According to the Telegraph, Rooney is a firm candidate to take charge of Plymouth, who stayed up in the Championship on the final day of the season. The pursuit of the England legend is said to be driven by ex-Everton academy boss Neil Dewsnip, who is Argyle’s director of football.
Argyle only retained their second-tier status at the expense of Rooney’s former club Birmingham after they beat Hull 1-0 at Home Park, before boss Ian Foster was sacked. And fans were less than impressed with the suggestion Rooney would be heading to the south coast, with many taking to X, formerly Twitter, to say: “That’s relegation next season.”

One fan asked: “How does he keep getting jobs?” A second said: “Because he did so well last season.” A third added: “So that’s 1 relegation spot confirmed.”
A fourth said: “In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit…..please all….pray for Plymouth.” And a fifth commented: “My commiserations to Plymouth fans for your relegation season 2024-25.” A sixth said: “That’s them going down then.”
Rooney spent 83 days in charge of Birmingham City, after replacing John Eustace last October, winning just two of his 15 matches at the helm. Before that, he had managed Derby and DC United, having retired from professional football in January 2021.
