People are realising why bras have a number of hooks – and it is not for consolation

Struggling with your bra? You’re not alone. It turns out that even the most seasoned of us can miss a trick when it comes to our undergarments.

We all love a bit of new undie shopping, don’t we? Whether you’re into frilly, fancy numbers or something more comfy and cotton, there’s one thing you’ll spot every time you clasp it at the back those pesky multiple hooks. Ever wondered what the deal is with them?

The question has been buzzing online, with user @coffeekittenttv hitting up X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, to ask: “Why do bras have hooks in the back, instead of an adjustable strap in the back and/or a clip in the front…? Genuine question.”

Echoing the sentiment, @jmproductionsyt chimed in: “This may be a dumb question, but why do bras unhook in the back and not in the front? Like why I gotta bend and twist my arms to blindly reach for the hook things instead of just grabbing the front? “.

Sure, some savvy brands offer front-fastening options, but the classic hook design isn’t just for show.

@StephBMore enlightened the internet with her post: “I just learned why bras have three hooks on them. You are supposed to wear it on the 3rd and as your bra stretches out, use the middle and first.”

And @SnapshionSocial backed her up, adding: “Ladies, did you know that bras stretch over time? That’s why there are three hooks in the back!”.

One Quora user commented: “Bras have the band under the breast line which give the support to it. If the hooks are in front, it’s difficult to get the shape of your breasts once the bra becomes loose. Back hooks bras can be hooked using the extreme end hook and go up to the third innermost while retaining the balance in support.”
