Man City to supply Ortega new contract as Ederson might go away in £60m switch

Manchester City will attempt to secure keeper Stefan Ortega on a new deal next week as they prepare for life without Ederson.

German stopper Ortega, 31, has again largely impressed in the final few weeks of the season after replacing injured first-choice Ederson during the champions’ crucial victory at Tottenham in their penultimate league outing. And despite a costly mistake in the FA Cup final defeat against Manchester United – leading to Alejandro Garnacho’s opener for their rivals in the 2-1 loss – his stock at the Etihad continues to rise.

Now boss Pep Guardiola, who anticipates losing Ederson this summer to the Saudi Pro League, is determined to keep hold of Ortega moving forward. The club’s football hierarchy will hold talks with the player’s representatives in the coming days over an improved extension on the table, which bumps up his weekly wage from £70,000 to £90,000.

Ortega is still under contract until June 2025 but the new deal would tie him down for an additional couple of seasons. Whether he puts pen to to paper will depend on what sort of guarantee Guardiola can give him regarding playing more regularly.

Since joining the club in July 2022 on a free from Arminia Bielefeld, Ortega has always been used in the domestic cup competitions but of his 33 appearances coming into the weekend, only 12 have been in the Premier League.

His consistent form has led to Guardiola saying the difference between his number one and two keepers is as small as he has known in his managerial career. If that is true, Ortega may well get an opportunity to prove he can be City’s regular between the posts – should Ederson move on.

The Brazilian, a £30m buy from Benfica in 2017, has made exactly 250 league appearances while winning six titles. He also starred in the club’s Champions League final triumph this time last year.

City want him to extend his £120,000 a week contract, which ends in June 2026 by at least another year. But so far negotiations have stalled and the feeling inside the club is Ederson, 30, is looking to get a big money deal in Saudi to wrap up his glittering career.

City will not allow him to leave on the cheap, though. They will demand £60m to consider selling.
