PETA slams promoting trade because it rages ‘cease utilizing pug canine in advertisements’

Animal rights organisation Peta has slammed firms that use pug dogs in promotions.

The campaign group says the companies are “promoting deformed, flat-faced dogs”. Activists have demanded the Pug Pubs chain change the names of its boozers which include the Black Pug, the Fat Pug, the Lazy Pug and the Royal Pug.

Elisa Allen, Peta’s vice president of programmes and operations, wrote in a letter to the pubs: “With this move, you would avoid promoting deformed, flat-faced dogs and instead help promote loveable and unique mixed breeds.”

“Pugs and other intentionally deformed ‘pedigrees’ endure a lifetime of debilitating symptoms that make it nearly impossible for them to run, chase a ball, or do most of the things that make dogs’ lives fulfilling,”

Some believe that years of breeding means pugs have exaggerated features and suffer with their health. A Royal Veterinary College study said pugs can have difficulty breathing and suffer skin infections.

Crufts, the world’s biggest dog show, has moved to ensure dogs that can suffer with breathing have to have a health check before competing.

Bill Lambert of the Kennel Club said: “Certain health problems have been exacerbated by their spike in popularity and the irresponsible breeding and buying of dogs with increasingly exaggerated features, popularised via celebrities and social media, and deemed to look ‘cute’.”

It is not just pubs that have been targeted. Aaron Carty runs CuppaPug, a café where customers can play with seven pugs, hit back at claims his dogs suffer,

He said: “Our pugs are healthy, not overweight, and do not make typical grunting sounds because they receive proper exercise and a human-grade diet.”
