Man City season participant rankings together with £77m revelation and freak of nature

Pep Guardiola will be on a mission to win even more trophies next season, in what could be his last one as Manchester City boss.

But when he looks back on this one, he will do so with a tinge of frustration and regret at what might have been. Despite winning an unprecedented fourth league title on the spin, back-to-back Trebles slipped through City’s grasp.

City dominated Real Madrid but lost on penalties in the Champions League quarter finals, before losing to a mediocre Manchester United team in the FA Cup final. Here we rate how Guardiola’s stars have performed this season.

Ederson 7

Reliable once again, but not at the same levels as in previous seasons. Could be leaving to join the Saudi Pro League.

Stefan Ortega 8

Stood in admirably when needed and produced heroics at Tottenham to help City seal their Premier League triumph.

Kyle Walker 9

The defensive speedster, who turns 34 on Tuesday, remains a freak of nature. Rarely has a bad game.

John Stones 7

Was a revelation in midfield at times and remains wonderfully versatile, but once again saw his campaign disrupted by injuries.

Ruben Dias 6

Remains one of the leaders of the squad, but produced some uncharacteristic mistakes in big games. He’s had better seasons.

Manuel Akanji 7

Played more games than he probably thought he would and found some consistency, but his lack of pace can expose him at times.

Nathan Ake 8

Despite having injuries, the Dutch international more than played his part. Has become an important player to Guardiola.

Josko Gvardiol 9

Has been a revelation this season, scoring some crucial goals as well to make the left back position his own at the Etihad after signing for £73m last summer.

Rico Lewis 6

Appeared to lose the trust of Guardiola in second half of season to become frustrated on the bench.

Rodri 8

The midfield maestro started to run out of steam towards the end of a gruelling campaign. But he’s become a victim of his own success, because he’s so good he cannot be left out.

Mateo Kovacic 7

A more than capable understudy to Rodri in the defensive midfield role. Started some crucial matches in final weeks of season.

Bernardo Silva 7

Lost his sparkle in the end, but still had a huge influence on the team. Never stopped running.

Kevin De Bruyne 6

Lacked his trademark brilliant consistency and didn’t score enough goals, having missed the first five months of the season with serious injury.

Phil Foden 10

The greatest season of his glittering career to date. Record goal tally and string of sensational performances.

Jeremy Doku 7

Continues to be a bag of tricks out on the wing. Has a big future ahead of him.

Jack Grealish 6

Failed to back up what he did last season, after losing form and fitness. Next season will be a big one for him.

Erling Haaland 7

Was always going to struggle to back up the previous season, but still managed 38 in all competitions. Remains a scoring machine.
