Pub employee’s Bank Holiday hell as glasses pile up – however there’s one other drawback

A punter was left fuming after their local beer garden was left to pile up with empty pint glasses during the Bank Holiday.

He took to Reddit‘s r/britishproblems forum to voice his frustration, revealing just one member of staff was left to deal with the mounting dishes. The reveller added one group hadn’t bothered to help clean up their glasses, despite having to walk through the pub to leave the boozer after finishing their drinks.

They commented: “Busy day in my local. Good weather and a band on and only 1 member of staff.

“Group outside left 30+ glasses on the table. Have to walk though the pub to leave.”

However, others said the customers weren’t to blame and said it was the pub’s responsibility to ensure proper staffing during sunny long weekends.

One said: “Why have they got 1 member of staff on in those conditions? I probably would take my glass to the bar but more think your local is s*** for leaving someone on their own with a band and bank holiday.”

Another agreed: “Good weather and a band on and only 1 member of staff? I’d assume they weren’t keen on the service if they couldn’t be a***d to bring the glasses back.” Fellow pub workers branded the decision to have just one staff member working on a Bank Holiday “absolutely mental.”

However others said pub-lovers should think twice before leaving their glasses on the table as it is a common courtesy to help staff clean up. One said: “I work in a pub, it’s very much appreciated if you bring your own glasses back.

“We do have a glass collector for busy shifts but we also get through a f**k ton of glasses.

“That said, one member of staff when you’ve got a band on is absolutely mental. What if they needed to change a barrel?

“But also, like others have said there’s also no judgement if you don’t bring your glass back, it’s not really something we notice cos glass collecting and tidying up is just part of the job. I will judge you for not saying please or thank you though.”

Another local chimed in that they would “never expect” punters to return their pint glasses, but it was appreciated when it happened. The person scribbled: “Good weather and a band playing. The landlord can pay for a band, but not the extra staff to help out?”

“I wouldn’t work for the landlord of the pub, if they couldn’t be bothered to help out. I worked in a pub for years and it’s always nice if customers returned their glasses, but I would never expect it.”
