Met Office points ‘hazard to life’ climate warnings forward of untamed thunderstorms

The Met Office has issued a ‘danger to life’ warning ahead of a two-day battering from thunderstorms for Brits.

The first of the warnings starts today (Tuesday, May 28), with the yellow caution in place for much of Northern Ireland, a belt encompassing much of the south of Scotland as far into England as Newcastle – and a large swathe from North Yorkshire all the way down to East Anglia.

There is a similar warning in place for Wednesday, May 29, although that encompasses just parts of Northern Scotland. There are also 20 flood alerts currently in place for England, and 12 for Scotland.

In its daily forecast, the Met Office said that scattered heavy showers are possible through this evening. Overnight it will remain mostly cloudy, with the risk of further showers, though these mainly focussed across northern and western areas.

As far as Wednesday is concerned, it should be a brighter day, though there will be a mix of sunshine and showers. Some of the showers will be heavy with the risk of hail and thunder.

The outlook for Thursday to Saturday gradually improves after a wet start. The Met Office website reads: “Sunshine and showers for Thursday, once again some heavy with hail and thundery.

“Slowly becoming drier through Friday and into Saturday, with increasing amounts of sunshine. Temperatures near average.”

Britain is bracing itself for thunderstorms

Some of the worst of today’s deluge could be seen in the northwest of England, according to data from Ventusky, including up to 2mm of rain to fall per hour across Merseyside.

Cumbria, the Isle of Man, Humberside and Lincolnshire, South West Scotland and North Wales will also be in for a rainy day, while daytime temperatures are to sit at around 13-15C across the UK. More unsettled weather is also expected on Wednesday, according to the weather maps.

BBC weather forecaster Tomasz Schafernaker said the weather outlook will remain “hit and miss” throughout the week, with no sign of prolonged warmer conditions for the time being.

He said: “Temperatures will be normal, nothing spectacular but at least by the end of the week it does look as though these low pressures should finally pull away as we see high pressure building but the winds will still come in from the north so the certainly isn’t any major warm up in the forecast.”
