Michael Schumacher’s son may make shock return to F1 for Canadian Grand Prix

Mick Schumacher could make a stunning F1 return with Alpine at the Canadian Grand Prix.

Schumacher, the son of seven-time world champion Michael, has been out of an F1 seat since he was dropped by Haas F1 team in 2022 after two years of racing. The 25-year-old joined Mercedes as a reserve driver last year but has not had the chance to drive for the Silver Arrows.

Away from F1, Schumacher signed up with the Alpine World Endurance Championship programme and will next month race at the iconic 24 Hours of Le Mans. And his new affiliation with Alpine has sparked a potential return to F1 amid incredible tension with the camp, namely between both drivers Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon.

On lap one of the Monaco Grand Prix last Sunday (May 26), Ocon attempted an audacious lunge down the inside of his team-mate, subsequently making contact and seeing the front wheel of Gasly’s car send his Alpine air bound, further straining an already fractious relationship.

Following the race, Alpine team principal Bruno Famin told broadcasters there would be “consequences” for Ocon, which could see him step down for the upcoming Grand Prix at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. The Frenchman could potentially be replaced by Alpine’s reserve driver Jack Doohan, or pave the way for a remarkable return for Schumacher.

Do you think Alpine should give Mick Schumacher a return to F1? Let us know in the comments section.

Ocon - Gasly

Speaking to Sky Germany, Famin revealed he’s been impressed by Schumacher’s adjustment to the challenges of the WEC, admitting it would be “a mistake” to not consider him for a seat next year, with both Gasly and Ocon out of contract at the end of the current season. He said: “I’m very happy with Mick.

“He’s super fast, but that’s not the main thing. In the WEC, you have to drive at a consistently high level and have a good team spirit. I’m very impressed with him because he has adapted his attitude to endurance racing from day one. He gets on very well with his team-mates.

“Everything is open for 2025, everyone is talking to everyone. It would be a mistake not to have Mick on the list.”

Schumacher was present at Monaco, albeit on the sidelines, he said: “My goal and my dream is to drive in Formula 1. That has always been the case and always will be.

“That’s why we have to make sure that the dominoes now fall in my favour and that I hopefully end up with a seat. What I can do for that is simply give my best performance in the WEC and also in Formula 1 and continue to perform well for the team as reserve driver and continue to hold talks.”
