  • Barry Mason, 45, tragically lost his life on April 16 after a house fire
  • He had been trying to save his son, Ethan from their home in Wigan

A hero dad who ran into a burning house to save his son has been buried with his little boy so he could ‘forever hold him in his arms’.

Barry Mason, 45, tragically lost his life after he raced into a blazing terraced property to rescue his son Ethan, four, on April 14.

Ethan was rushed to hospital after the fire broke out in Wigan, Greater Manchester, where he was placed in an induced coma but he died on April 16.

The pair were laid to rest together last Thursday and the youngster’s aunt Jessica Causer said they have been buried in the same coffin, cuddling each other.

She said: ‘Barry and Ethan were put to rest together with Barry forever holding Ethan in his arms.’

A Go Fund Me page, that’s raised over £60,000, was set up to support the family and people have paid tribute to the ‘amazing’ father and son duo on there.

One touching message read: ‘No family should ever have to go through this.

‘I know no words can make a difference and no amount of money/help can mend your hearts.

‘Hopefully these donations from well wishers all over may ever so slightly help to ease at least some of your financial worries during your heartbreak.

‘Sending you all so much love and strength to get through these heartbreaking times.’

Another person commented: ‘Our heart-felt sympathy to all the family for your huge loss of your brave husband and beautiful baby boy.’

Someone else wrote: ‘God bless you all, there are no words for this tragedy.

‘I’m so sorry, sleep in eternal peace Ethan and Barry.’

Mr Mason’s wife, Rachel, 45, David, and their two other children, Bethany, 16 and Isaac, 14, all made it out of the burning semi and were taken to hospital. They have all since been discharged.

Mr Mason’s sister-in-law, Jessica Causer, described Mr Mason as ‘our very own super hero.’

Alongside a picture of Mr Mason with Ethan on his shoulders, she posted on Facebook: ‘Barry, we are heartbroken. Such a gentle giant and a devoted Daddy until your last breath.

‘Words will never describe just how grateful we are to you, hold our baby tight up there.’

The fire, in the early hours of Sunday morning, is thought to have been started by a faulty mini-fridge in the kitchen.

David, who suffered burns, scrambled down a drain pipe at the back of the house to escape the blaze.

His siblings, Isaac and Bethany, are thought to have jumped to safety from an upstairs window onto the family’s trailer tent, which was parked at the front of the house.

Mrs Mason was rescued when passers-by helped her out an upstairs window with a ladder.

Mrs Bimson said David was ‘blaming himself because he didn’t stop his dad’ but added: ‘Everyone knows he wouldn’t have been able to. Barry would put his children first every time.

‘Rachel was the same. She and Barry shared a sofa bed downstairs because they wanted their children to have a bedroom each.

‘When the fire started she must have gone upstairs to get her kids because she had to come down a ladder to escape.

‘Isaac and Bethany had bedrooms at the front of the house and Ethan and David were at the back.

‘We were told another friend of Bethany’s was supposed to be staying at the house that night but pulled out at the last minute because she was ill. It doesn’t bear thinking about.’

Another heartbreaking message read: ‘I only hope I’d be as brave as this amazing dad if the worst happened.

‘RIP you hero and I’m sure your family will be so proud of your bravery. RIP little man.’
