Pub chain launches free beer giveaway in the present day – however you must reply a query

Beer lovers with a decent bit of football trivia up their sleeves can nab themselves a free pint today at pubs run by a popular brewery.

Thirsty footy lovers will need to get down to their local Greene King today (May 29) if they want to get the free bev – but there’s a catch. As England gears up to get behind the Three Lions and Scotland behind the Tartan Army, the pub chain is attempting to overcome recent survey results that claimed one in five Brits admit they don’t know any trivia about the sport whatsoever.

And, on top of that, the data claims that three in four Brits are unfamiliar with the modern false nine position, which sees strikers sit deeper in a more playmaking, link-up-oriented role. This position is the inspiration behind the pubco’s new False Nine golden ale.

Greene King is today giving out a pint of the new beer across 532 pubs nationwide if punters are able to name a false nine player.

These include the top answers from the survey for players who have played the false nine position, which are:

  1. LIONEL MESSI (22%)
  2. PHIL FODEN (10%)
  3. JOHAN CRUYFF (10%)
  4. ROBERTO FIRMINO (7%)
  5. FRANCESCO TOTTI (6%)

A further 30% of Brits surveyed reportedly didn’t know the offside rule while phrases diagonal and draft excluder also reportedly caused problems. According to the survey, the top five most confusing football terms to Brits were:

  1. DRAFT EXCLUDER (16% understood the term)
  2. FALSE NINE (19%)
  3. OVERLAP (29%)
  4. DIAGONAL (30%)
  5. STUDS UP (36%)

Former Arsenal and England forward Alan Smith said: “The modern false nine is quite a tricky position to define so it’s not surprising to hear the nation is a bit confused by what exactly it means. From Messi to Firmino, there’ve been some iconic footballers that have played in this role so it’s great to see a nod to the position with the launch of Greene King’s new False Nine golden ale.

“Whether you’re a die-hard fan or a casual supporter who doesn’t even know what the offside rule is, now’s the time to get behind the nation and cheer them on to glory this summer. And what better way to do it than at the pub with your friends and family – and a refreshing pint of False Nine in hand?

“So, head to your local Greene King on Wednesday 29th May, simply name a false nine player (Messi, Foden, Cruyff, Firmino or Totti) to grab your free drink. Maybe I’ll see you there!”

Will Hemmings, Marketing Director for Brewing & Brands at Greene King, said: “We are delighted to launch our new False Nine beer, in perfect time for this summer’s football. To celebrate the launch, we’re going to be giving away the pint for free for one day only in selected Greene King Pubs, but only to those that can prove their football knowledge by naming a false nine player, including those voted the top five players by our nationwide survey.

“All pub-goers need to do is give the name of a false nine player at the bar when purchasing the drink, then they can claim at no cost at all. We’re hoping this will give Brits the taste of False Nine ahead of the big games, meaning punters across the nation can enjoy the drink throughout the tournament as they toast to England and Scotland!”
