The election’s within the bag? Rishi travels with a £750 luxurious backpack

Rishi Sunak was spotted travelling with a £750 luxury backpack – personalised with his ‘RS’ initials – as he boarded the sleeper train to Penzance in Cornwall last night.

The Prime Minister headed to the South West for another day of general election campaigning as he toured Cornwall and Devon in his bid to remain in No10.

As he spoke to staff at London Paddington station, before making his 280-mile overnight journey, Mr Sunak slung a black bag over his right shoulder.

It has now been revealed to be a Tumi Arrive Bradley backpack that sold for £750 in high-end stores, including Selfridges, according to the Daily Mirror.

Mr Sunak, who together with his wife Akshata Murty is thought to be worth around £650million, was also shown to have had his initials monogrammed on the bag.

As he spoke to staff at the station, the PM said he was ‘very excited’ to be using the sleeper service.

This morning, on his arrival in Cornwall, Mr Sunak was quizzed about why he had chosen to travel by train rather than a helicopter, which he has often used in the past.

‘The train was great, I thoroughly enjoyed it,’ the Tory leader replied.

‘I’ve been taking lots of pictures and videos – sending back to my kids – and saying we’ll be back here as a family at some point.

‘I’m excited to be out and about in Cornwall and heading up to Devon later today.’

Mr Sunak’s backpack is not the first time he has been revealed to own luxury items.

In July 2022, when he first campaigned to be Tory leader, Mr Sunak was seen weating a pair of £490 brown Prada suede loafers on a visit to a building site in Teesside.

And, when he was Chancellor, Mr Sunak was pictured posing with coffee mug costing £180.

The Ember travel mug, reportedly a gift from his wife, was described as doing ‘more than simply keep your coffee hot’.

‘Our smart mug allows you to set an exact drinking temperature and keeps it there for up to three hours, so your coffee is never too hot, or too cold,’ the product description added.

When he arrived in Penzance today, Mr Sunak visited the Long Rock train depot where he met apprentices as he promoted plans to boost apprenticeships while axing ‘rip off’ degrees.

The PM later met apprentices at a broadband company in Cornwall where he was given a chance to try out their technical skills.

After unsheathing a cable from a blue casing and wiping it with alcohol gel, he used a small device to join it with another.

Kiri James, 30, a field service engineer apprentice who led a demonstration for the Prime Minister, ran the cable through a testing machine and said he had carried out a perfect splice.

Mr Sunak pumped his arms in the air to celebrate.
