People solely simply realising what the ‘G’ in 5G means and its distinction from 4G

While the 1G network has been kicking around since 1979, loads of us are still in the dark about what the ‘G’ actually means.

The 5G network is slowly taking over and if you’ve got the latest smartphone, you’ll know it’s meant to be a whopping 100 times quicker than 4G. But ever since 5G hit the streets in 2019, it’s been dogged by some wild conspiracy theories, with a few folks insisting it’s somehow mixed up with the Covid-19 virus.

Health experts quickly put paid to these controversial thoughts and opinions. But this whole 5G saga has left people scratching their heads, wondering what the heck the ‘G’ stands for and how the generations of networks, from 1G through to the shiny new 5G, actually differ.

Confused people have taken to Reddit with questions like: “What does the ‘G’ represent for smartphones? “, and others are asking: “What’s the difference between 4G and 3G? And is there a 2G or just a G?”

Unveiled by Nippon Telegraph and Telephone, 1G was first introduced to the folks of Tokyo in 1979, quickly becoming Japan’s first nationwide network within half a decade. It was dubbed 1G, as this marked the first generation of cellular network tech succeeding mobile radio phone systems, which we now retrospectively refer to as pre-cellular or zero generation (0G).

This historic leap initiated advancements into 2G, 3G, 4G, paving the path for today’s 5G – with ‘G’ representing ‘generation’. After its successful inception in Japan, Ameritech brought 1G to American shores in 1983, with Canada catching the buzz just years later.

Triggering from this, in 1991, Finland witnessed the launch of 2G on the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) offering “improved sound quality, reducing static and crackling noises while you were talking”. With technological developments accelerating, the world soon welcomed 3G, 4G and now 5G offered by global mobile phone companies – with the anticipation of future generations.
