Wembley beefs up safety for Champions League closing after poor fan behaviour

Wembley bosses have beefed up security ahead of Saturday’s Champions League final between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund.

The move comes after poor fan behaviour marred last weekend’s FA Cup final and EFL Championship Play-Off final. Police made 74 arrests in 48 hours for incidents relating to fraud, drug use and violence.

Twelve people were arrested for handling pyrotechnic equipment, while two more supporters were arrested for tragedy chanting.

Wembley will host what is a record-breaking eighth Champions League final this weekend. But the stadium’s ability to stage some of the game’s biggest events remains under close scrutiny, in the wake of the appalling violence which ruined the Euros final between England and Italy in 2022.

And stadium director Chris Bryant admits the authorities will adopt a zero-tolerance approach before, during and after the biggest game in club football. More stewards have been employed, while there will also be additional ticket checks, improved fencing and new security lanes in operation.

Fan violence marred the FA Cup final and Championship play-off final

Bryant said: “We have a zero-tolerance approach for any form of illegal, anti-social, offensive and discriminatory conduct, and our crowd safety teams work incredibly hard to ensure perpetrators are quickly identified and reported to the Police.

“These (recent) arrests are a clear message that this type of behaviour will not be tolerated at Wembley Stadium for all our events, including the upcoming UEFA Champions League Final.

“We want all supporters coming to Wembley Stadium to enjoy a great day out, in a safe and secure environment.”
