Woman will get final revenge on mum who shamed her figure-hugging promenade gown

The time is nearing for students to dust off their ballgowns and select the perfect tie as school prom season looms.

Year 11 pupils are currently engrossed in their GCSE studies, with many preparing to bid farewell to the school corridors they’ve walked through daily for years. From signing shirts to penning yearbook messages, schools uphold a host of traditions.

However, one of the most thrilling aspects of concluding Year 11 is attending the prom. Usually taking place in June and July, complete with elegant dresses and limousines, it’s a memorable night for students. But the question of what to wear often causes anxiety. One woman has recounted the shocking moment she chose her prom dress, only for her mum to “shamed” her – prompting her to seek revenge.

The woman, who prefers to remain anonymous, attended her senior prom a decade ago at the age of 18. In a recent Reddit post, she described how thrilled she was to shop for her dress with her best friend; they decided on matching mermaid-style dresses in different colours.

However, her mum was far from pleased, as the former prom attendee revealed: “I showed my mum the dress, I don’t remember her having any sort of reaction.”

The woman claimed her mum only remarked that the skirt needed hemming and would be taken to a mate for alterations. The daughter recounted: “We went to the tailoring appointment a few days later, and on the way home, I could tell she was angry. She told me that she was ashamed to be seen with me in the dress and that I had shamed her in front of her friend. I was totally blindsided, because I hadn’t thought of the dress as in any way scandalous – there were no cut-outs and it was absolutely a typical prom dress.”

She continued: “She didn’t forbid me from wearing it or even offer to get me something else; she just acted disappointed, and I felt like there was nothing I could do about it.” Crushed by her mother’s harsh words, the young girl hatched a plan for payback.

She explained that the weekend before prom, she convinced her boyfriend to whisk her away to a pop-up suit hire. She said: “I rented a women’s tuxedo and bought cheap shoes to go with it. The day before prom, I hid myself from my mum while I was getting ready. When everyone walked out into the yard where my mum was waiting to take pictures, I walked out.”

Delighted by her plan, she added: “The look on her face was incredible. I knew she wouldn’t approve.” The prom attendee told her mum that because she didn’t approve of her dress she decided to wear something a little more ‘modest’.

She explained: “I told her I’d sold the dress and gave her some money to cover the alterations and then turned around and walked out. We have never talked about this incident, but I think my mum treated me with more respect ever after.”

Over thousands Reddit users to applaud the plan. One individual said: “While I applaud you for the revenge, I’m so sorry you felt like you had to do this. My best friend and I also matched for our senior prom and it’s still something I look back on and smile about. I hate that you missed out on that.”

Another commented: “That is legendary! You’re a force to be reckoned with.” Another dubbed her plan as “awesome”. “This is great! Well done,” said another. Another wrote: “I wish I could have seen her face both when you came out and when you explained why you did it.”

But another disagreed with the plan and questioned: “Why would you punish your own self to get back at another? The better revenge would have just been to confidently rock your pretty dress that you had been looking forward to wearing.”
