Blow for Sunak as extra individuals than ever say Keir Starmer could be higher PM

Rishi Sunak’s desperate bid to revive the Tories’ fortunes has fallen flat – as a new poll shows more people than ever think Keir Starmer would be a better Prime Minister.

Some 44% of the public believe Labour’s leader would make a better Prime Minister – a 14 point lead over Mr Sunak, despite his blitz of barmy policies this week. Chris Hopkins, Political Research Director at Savanta, who produced the poll, said: “Keir Starmer has been comfortably beating Rishi Sunak in our all-important best Prime Minister metric since May 2023.

“But Savanta’s latest findings suggest that an even bigger gulf has appeared in the public’s eye between who they think would be the best PM – Starmer now leads Sunak by 14-points, the largest lead he has ever recorded over him.” Yesterday the Mirror revealed Labour had maintained its 20 point lead, with the Tories failing to claw back any ground in the first week of the campaign.

And a ‘Megapoll’ published on Friday night predicted Labour would win a mammoth 476 seats, with a majority of 302 – an even bigger win than Tony Blair ’s landslide of 418 seats. It suggested Tories could be reduced to just 66 seats – just 7 more than the Lib Dems.

The first Mirror poll since he called the election shows he has made no progress in chipping away at Labour ’s lead. Voters have been left unimpressed by the Prime Minister’s barmy promises, including the return of National Service.

Our election tracker will reveal what the country really thinks every week between now and polling day on July 4.

The survey conducted by Whitestone Insight shows Keir Starmer ’s party has a commanding 20 point lead, a week into the campaign. According to the poll, Labour has the support of 44% of voters with the Tories trailing on 24%. This is unchanged from a fortnight ago.

Reform has dropped two points to 11%, the Liberal Democrats are up one point to 9%. The Greens are on 6% and the SNP on 3%.

Worryingly for Mr Sunak, only 33% of Conservative voters think he is running a successful campaign, compared to 64% of Labour voters who say the same about their party. Overall, 30% of people picked Labour when asked whose campaign is going better compared to 8% who said the Tories.
