Meet Jamie Bynoe-Gittens – the opposite Englishman who might characteristic for Dortmund

Jadon Sancho and Jude Bellingham are the two main attractions on Saturday evening – but there will be a third Englishman in the mix.

Jamie Bynoe-Gittens has six Champions League appearances to his name this season, and he even found the net against AC Milan in the group stages. However, it hasn’t been plain sailing for the Englishman since the turn of the year and the arrival of Sancho.

Bynoe-Gittens, 19, was born in Reading – and it was there, after a short spell with Caversham Trents, he started his footballing career.

Even at an extremely young age, his skills on the ball were apparent and he was soon snapped up by Manchester City. He would never make a senior appearance under Pep Guardiola.

Like Sancho, Bynoe-Gittens opted to bet on himself, and in 2020 he moved to Dortmund. His first season was ravaged by covid-19 and an ACL injury that left him on the sidelines.

It wasn’t until 2022 he would make his Bundesliga debut, coming off the bench in a 6-1 win against Wolfsburg – and his first goal would soon follow, when he found the net away against Freiburg.

“He’s a game-changer in the truest sense. He’s just so explosive,” Dortmund head coach Edin Terzic gushed. While teammate Karim Adeyemi said: “He has no fear. For me, he is one of the best players one-against-one I have ever seen, to be honest. He will be a really good player!”

Bynoe-Gittens seemed destined for superstardom – but his minutes have dried up since the arrival on Sancho in January.

He didn’t feature off the bench in the Champions League semi-finals against PSG as Sancho put in one of the displays of his career. Bynoe-Gittens, however, could be an impact player off the bench for Dortmund at Wembley.

Dortmund are looking for their first European triumph since 1998 when they rock up to these shores on Saturday.
