UK ‘summer season’ to be blighted by snowstorms – so put the barbeques and bikinis away

Pack up the bikinis, budgie smugglers and barbecues – Britain’s barmy “summer” is set to be blighted with snowstorms.

The Arctic blast is set to start to freeze the UK from Tuesday when a wall of ice is set to slam the nation. Alarming blue-swathed weather maps from WXCharts show Glasgow and Inverness could be blitzed with a snow bomb Tuesday and Wednesday, with rain and thunderstorms set to lash the rest of the country until August.

Experts say the big chill, expected to send temperatures plunging to 1C in places, will kick off what could be the soggiest UK summer in 112 years. Forecasters predict the mini-freeze will grip the UK until Thursday.

The miserable maps were unveiled as the Met Office is said to be warning the government and transport chiefs June to August could be the wettest on record.

If rain hits on more than 55 days this year, it could make it the wettest holiday season since 1912.

Maps show Newcastle, Manchester and Birmingham will be struck heaviest by rain and thunderstorms – starting on Tuesday along with the ice blast.

A colossal storm from the Azores is also on the horizon that could see Britain drenched for weeks.

Forecasters at the Met Office are understood to have warned the government and transport chiefs it could cause deadly travel conditions stretching until August.

The Met Office’s forecast for early June warns: “The first part of the period most likely characterised by showers, sometimes blustery, occasionally heavy with thunderstorms, sometimes forming larger bands of rain.

“Showers most often across north-western areas but all areas likely to see some, generally lighter in the south with a good deal of brighter spells around these. Temperatures rather cool.”

It also says mist and fog will blanket Britain.

The predictions come as bookmakers slashed odds on this year seeing the wettest summer on record. There is now only a 7/2 shot from Ladbrokes for this summer to enter the record books.

Spokesman Alex Apati said: “We’re strapping in for a record-breaking washout of a summer, with more rain set to batter Brits over the next few weeks.”
