Local councils urged to avoid wasting Woodsmith staff at Anglo American

Councils must do everything to help workers who are laid off at Anglo American’s mine in North Yorkshire into new jobs, a former secretary of state has insisted.
The Mail revealed earlier this month that more than 1,000 roles could be cut at Woodsmith, which is a mammoth fertiliser mine being built under the North York Moors National Park.
Simon Clarke, the Conservative MP for the nearby Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland constituency, and a former Secretary of State for Levelling Up, told the Mail on Sunday he had already spoken to Redcar and Cleveland Council about providing support.

He added that the Tees Valley Mayor, Ben Houchen, also will be keen to get high-skilled contractors jobs in the Teesside, which is a major industrial hub.
Mining giant Anglo said it would slash spending at the project as part of its strategy to fend off takeover attempts from its larger rival BHP.
Around 1,400 work on the Woodsmith site.
Clarke said: ‘I am confident that the overwhelming majority of contractors affected will be in high demand.’
He added that the council ‘will do all in their power to provide assistance for people who have lost their jobs and I know our region’s Job Centres and the office of the Tees Valley Mayor will also be on the case’.
