Nigel Farage says he’ll run to be an MP in main General Election U-turn
Flip-flopping Nigel Farage has said he will run to be a candidate for Reform UK in a major U-turn.
The seven-time failed candidate said he will stand in Clacton, Essex, and he was taking over the running of Reform UK from Richard Tice. Mr Farage had ruled himself out as a candidate after Rishi Sunak called the General Election, complaining that six weeks was “not long enough” to find a seat.
But with only days to go until the deadline, the former Ukip leader performed a major U-turn and said he would stand to be a Reform UK MP after all. At a hastily arranged emergency press conference in London, Mr Farage said: “Difficult though it is, I can’t let down those millions of people, I simply can’t do it, it’d be wrong.
“So I have decided I’ve changed my mind, it’s allowed you know, it’s not always a sign of weakness, it could potentially be a sign of strength. So I am going to stand in this election.”
Mr Farage said he will launch his campaign on Tuesday.
Mr Farage has unsuccessfully stood for Parliament seven times. The 60-year-old, who has found a new career as a GB News host, first tried to become an MP at the Eastleigh by-election in 1994. His last failed bid to become an MP came in 2015, when he lost by 2,812 votes in South Thanet.
