‘World’s most distant bar’ is on island six-day boat journey away from civilisation
The so-called ‘most isolated bar in the world’ is on a volcanic island deep in the South Atlantic Ocean and takes six days to reach by boat from the nearest country – and it’s technically part of the UK.
The Albatross bar is 1,732 miles from Cape Town in South Africa, and a meagre 1,514 miles from Saint Helena, another British overseas territory. And despite being in somewhere called ‘Edinburgh’ – it is some 6,500 miles from the Scottish capital.
That is because it is in Edinburgh of the Seven Seas, the dinky capital of the imposing island of Tristan da Cunha (population 238). The island is ringed by raging seas and sits below towering volcanos.

And hardy travellers who braved the journey there unanimously agree that it is worth it for the cheap, cold beer.
One Canadian who made the journey in March 2018 raved on TripAdvisor soon after: “Since this is the world’s most remote inhabited island, this must be the most remote bar.
“The beer was cold, the wine was warm, however, the weather was lovely and we were toasting the fortune of being some of the few people in the world who have had the opportunity to visit this interesting island. Lucky us.”

A bloke from Texas hailed the prices and said there was a “friendly crowd”. He wrote in Januray 2018: “The only pub on Tristan, with very reasonably priced drinks, and a friendly crowd, when it’s open! Also had an adjacent community center that is kid friendly.”
One woman moaned that The Albatross’ decor “could do with a bit of sprucing up” but added that she had a nice time.
“Cheap beer and booze (surprising given how far it travels) and the temporary barman (the Finance Manager) was a great host telling us some interesting anecdotes,” she said.

And as if it wasn’t hard enough to reach, need to contact the local government and ask for permission to visit the bar — without it, you’ll be turned away.
There’s a full selection of wine, beer, and spirits, as well as a pool table.
The bar needed a new roof after a 2001 hurricane took the old one off.
