Birmingham Airport passengers face one other day of chaos in lengthy waits

Passengers at Birmingham Airport are facing yet another day of chaos as hundreds of people have been left waiting in long queues.

Claims have also been made that a doctor has had to treat two people for hypothermia.

Holidayers were standing in huge queues well outside the departure doors of the West Midlands airport in the early hours of this morning, with some turning up three hours before take-off only to find themselves a long way from departures.

Dr Simon Gillson claimed at 5.18 this morning on X/Twitter that he had ‘just treated two people for hypothermia’ while waiting in a long queue outside the airport.

The GP, from the private Concierge Medical Practice, shared a photo of the snaking line and wrote: ‘I’m typically British so not a natural complainer but this is a proper shambles @bhx_official.’

Passenger Jodie Rhianon warned passengers to avoid flying from Birmingham, as she shared a picture of the massive queue at around 5.45am today.

She wrote: ‘Public service announcement: If you are thinking of flying from Birmingham airport anytime soon. Don’t.

‘You’re welcome.’

Social media user ‘CaptainGlobie’, at around 7.30am posted a picture of the queue which had stretched to outside the Arrivals entrance, and wrote: ‘Good job the suns out…

‘To be fair to staff they are doing a great job trying to make sure people get flights on time but it needs fixing. Not like you wouldn’t expect passengers at an airport…’

At 5.15am today, @BiteYourBrum posted: ‘Yeeeeah, Birmingham Airport is an absolute shambles – Glad I came three hours early now.

‘I can hardly see departures but there’s hundreds in front of me just to get inside. Oh and if you come by monorail they’ll just send you outside to join this, btw. What fun @bhx_official.’

She later added that it took around 90 minutes to get through the queue in total.

This is the second day of chaos in a row at Birmingham Airport after huge queues have formed outside yesterday amid confusion over new 100ml liquid rules and 3D baggage scanners.

Furious passengers faced hours-long queues to get through security after the airport installed a new technology which allows people to travel with liquids up to two litres in their bags.

Birmingham Airport met the deadline at the start of this month to install the new 3D scanners, but officials at the West Midlands hub decided to combine both the old and the new rules for carrying liquids ‘until further notice’.

The airport said the former 100ml limits still apply, but passengers will be allowed to carry them inside their hand luggage instead of being separately screened, which has sparked confusion amongst passengers.
