Rayner will get applause as she hits out at Mordaunt for ‘backing Liz Truss’

Labour’s Angela Rayner received an applause from the BBC debate election audience as she told Penny Mordaunt: “You backed Liz Truss and crashed our economy”.

It came as the Tory Cabinet minister used the debate tonight to try to criticise Labour’s plans on the economy and the NHS. She said it was “really important” to keep a strong budget and economy.

But Labour’s Deputy Leader responded, saying: “You’ve just said that we need a strong economy. You backed Liz Truss and crashed our economy. You made people like me redundant when we were in the homecare service.”

During the 2020 Tory leadership campaign Ms Mordaunt came out swinging for the disaster PM after her own bid for the party’s leadership failed.

She described Ms Truss at the time as the “hope candidate”, adding in the summer of 2020: “Seeing her over the last few weeks has made me want to help her, to help her win, to help build the team we need to win the country, and to give ourselves as a party and as a nation the pride and confidence we need to reach our full potential.”

Just weeks later Ms Truss, who became PM in September 2020, was forced out of office after just 49 days in No10 after her disastrous mini-Budget caused turmoil in the financial markets.

During the debate on Friday evening Ms Rayner and Ms Mordaunt repeatedly clashed, with Labour’s Deputy Leader accusing the senior Tory of lying over Labour’s tax plans.
