PGA Tour star is sleeping on his personal driveway after talks along with his spouse

Jason Day has opened up on why he’s bunking down in his RV during the Memorial Tournament – despite living just 30 minutes away.

The 36-year-old Aussie golf star is camped out on his driveway thanks to his wife Ellie, who suggested a change in his approach for this year’s visit to the Muirfield Village Golf Club.

Day has struggled to find any semblance of form at the course in years gone by. So his other half reckoned he may benefit from following his usual routine of living away from home – albeit only a few metres.

In a bid to turn his luck around, he’s parked the motorhome right outside their Columbus, Ohio base and is camping out there. He addressed his close proximity in an interview with SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio, reports the Express.

“Thirty-minute drive, not too bad,” Day shared with host Ron Green. “I am staying in my bus in my driveway, though.” A shocked Green quizzed: “Staying in your bus, in your driveway at home? Is there a story behind that? A reason behind that?”

“No, so my wife suggested it,” Day replied. “In the past, I’ve had some poor results here and she’s like, ‘I think you’re too relaxed and you’re out of, you know, structure. And you need to treat it as a tournament week.’ So we have a spot where we park our bus in the driveway and, yeah, I’m staying there.”

But it seems the switch hasn’t quite done the trick for the golfer from Down Under. After two rounds, he’s languishing in T45 at four over par, trailing a whopping 13 shots behind the frontrunner Scottie Scheffler – who’s sitting pretty at nine under.

Day’s had only one top 10 and two top 25 finishes in his 14 career starts at the course, with his T4 in 2020 coming amid the pandemic. Attempting to explain that record, he continued: “I don’t know, it’s a little different.

“In team sports, you typically play better at your home stadium or if it’s a home game you typically play better because you’ve got the fans.

“For me, I think it’s just a busy week, you’ve got family and friends coming in and out. It is a little bit more of a relaxed week, even though it is a tough golf course. But overall I feel good this week. We’ve got three big tournaments coming up in a row, so I’m trying to get as focused as possible.”
