Hollywood’s Rob McElhenney renews Gareth Bale plea and begs him to affix Wrexham

Wrexham’s co-owner, Rob McElhenney has reassured football star Gareth Bale that an offer is “still on the table” in an attempt to lure the Welsh legend out of retirement.

At only 34, Bale shocked fans when he announced his retirement from professional football in January 2023 after less than a year at MLS side Los Angeles FC, post his departure from Real Madrid.

The talented winger was widely acknowledged as one of the best players of his era and boasts five Champions League trophies with Los Blancos, although his passion for the game waned towards the end of his career.

The ex-Wales captain, who fulfilled his dream of playing in the 2022 World Cup aiding their first qualification since 1958, ended his time in Madrid amidst strained relationships.

And it led to claims of prioritising golf over football – a controversy that eventually led to his detachment from football following a short US stint.

Always keeping an eye on reviving Bale’s football career, McElhenney had made several propositions and looked forward to making him the face of Wrexham.

Though his initial attempts were declined by Bale last year, McElhenney has renewed his offer subsequent to Wrexham’s promotion to League One. “Gareth Bale is still technically available! I made the plea last year and I’m just going to tell Gareth that the offer is still on the table.

“We’ll let him play golf whenever he wants. Just as long he comes training and we’ll figure out how to get him in the team,” he told The Athletic, reports the Mirror.

Although pre-season training would likely ensure that Bale would be Wrexham’s standout player and arguably the EFL’s biggest star, Bale seems content with his retirement decision. Last year, his agent, Jonathan Barnett, verified that Bale has no ambition to reenter the world of football.

“I think for him, it [retirement] was the right time,” Barnett confessed to Sky Sports News. “He’s accomplished everything he wanted – he played for Wales at the World Cup’s highest level, which is what he truly desired, and I believe he understood his body couldn’t handle more.

“He’s struggled with his health in recent years. He’s had a glorious career. He’s enjoyed himself, but he is currently treasuring a fantastic life. He is surrounded by family, which is primary.

“He’s devoting ample time to his children and that’s his desire. Yes, he’ll embarking on other pursuits down the track, but right now, let him simply relish life.”
