Local residents told of their shock at the time as the street and roads nearby were cordoned off while an armed response unit attended alongside West Yorkshire Police officers, negotiators, the dog handling unit and police constables.

Witnesses from the scene said they saw a man hanging out of an upstairs window at the house and drones were spotted flying overhead.

One resident who lives nearby told Leeds Live: ‘They’ve just said it’s an incident they won’t say anything else.’

Another added: ‘I’ve never seen anything like this before.’

West Yorkshire Police said work was carried out by emergency services to ensure the incident was brought to a safe conclusion, but at 10.50pm, armed officers forced entry to the address by deploying distraction devices and found the man critically injured. He was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead in the early hours of Monday.

The force has said it has referred itself to the police watchdog, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), and has declared an independent investigation.

A spokesperson for the force said: ‘A police operation that was ongoing at an address in Half Mile Green, Stanningley, Leeds, has concluded with the man involved being taken to hospital in a critical condition and later pronounced dead.
