Erik ten Hag is ‘set to signal a two-year contract extension at United’

Erik ten Hag is expected to sign a new two-year extension to his Manchester United deal, a day after the uncertainty over his future was at last ended, according to reports.

The Dutchman had ended the season with his position at the club under heavy scrutiny, before Untied conducted a review to ascertain whether or not to keep the manager in place. 

It then emerged on Tuesday night that he would indeed be staying at the helm, with reports now suggesting the club are prepared to back the coach with a new two-year deal. 

That deal, according to the Telegraph, will supersede his current contract, which runs out in 2025, meaning he will have three more years at Old Trafford from this summer. 

The club’s end of season review had dragged on into a third week following the end of a campaign that saw the club finish eighth but still win the FA Cup and qualify for the Europa League.

The club had assessed alternative managerial options to the Dutchman during that time, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe even holding talks with Thomas Tuchel in Monaco. 

The German however distanced himself from the position, while fellow former Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino and Brentford’s Thomas Frank were also under consideration. 

Reports suggest that Ten Hag was disappointed by the club’s decision to talk with other candidates, yet he is not thought to feel his position has been entirely undermined, accepting his future was in doubt. 

This reported contract would therefore be a sign of good faith from the club, with Ratcliffe seemingly willing to back Ten Hag in the first summer of the new INEOS era at Old Trafford. 

The end of season review took some time, however INEOS feel that it is fair given it is the first they have ever conducted, and while similar evaluations are set to take place every year, their is confidence the process will be more straight-forward. 

It comes at a time when plenty of changes have been made behind the scenes at United, with Omar Berrada set to take up his new role as CEO in July, with Dan Ashworth set to arrive from Newcastle as sporting director, and Jason Wilcox already appointed technical director.
