  • An out-of-control Nissan Qashqai smashed into a block of flats in south Wales
  • A cream Fiat outside the Newport block was seen severely damaged as well

An out-of-control car smashed into a block of flats and landed in someone’s living room in south Wales.

The blue Nissan Qashqai driver smashed through the brick wall and window of the ground floor apartment in Gaer, Newport.

Local police confirmed there were no reported injuries at the scene but added that a man was taken to hospital as a precaution.

Passers-by saw the wrecked car sitting in the living room after it had seemingly been in a collision with another vehicle outside and swerved off across a lawn into the flat.

A cream Fiat outside the block was shown to be severely damaged in footage shot after the incident, with its rear end smashed in and items hanging out of the boot.

One witness said: ‘Someone came home to a nasty surprise. Not nice to have a Qashqai sitting where your sofa should be, is it?’

Another said: ‘My car had a flat the other day but this is ridiculous.’

A 15 second video showed a fire engine at the scene with fire crews assessing the damage to the building and shocked people crowded around the area.

Locals said the residents of the flat – who were not named – were moved out while structural engineers examined the damage to the apartment block.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said they attended a road traffic collision at the Fortlea apartment building in Gaer Road at around 2.30pm yesterday.

A number of crews attended, as well safety officers and Gwent Police officers, but the cause of the crash is unclear as investigations continue.

Gwent Police confirmed that a man was taken to hospital as a precaution, but there were no reported injuries.

A Newport City Council statement said: ‘Structural engineers from NCC and Newport City Homes (NCH) are assessing a block of flats in the Gaer after a vehicle collided with the building.

‘NCH is on site to assist affected residents and will provide temporary accommodation. We are working together to address any needs.’
