Turkey have been topped Euro 2024 champions with England in second place
Turkey has been crowned Euro 2024 champions – of food. Amazon’s 75,000 staff were asked to vote for their favourite grub from the 24 nations taking part in the soccer showpiece in Germany.
And 28% voted Turkey’s kebabs top of the league saying they were ‘most loved’, ‘most satisfying’ and it was a ‘go-to dish’.
Over half of those who voted for kebabs said they had at least one a week while 17% tuck into one every day.
England’s humble beans on toast came second with 14%. Italy’s pasta and Spain’s paella were close behind ahead of host nation Germany’s currywurst and Scotland’s haggis.

But France crashed out – with its famous bean stew cassoule scoring just 1%.
Czech Republic’s Svíčková (tenderloin soup), Holland’s Nieuwe (raw herring), Croatia’s Crni rižot (black risotto) and Slovakia’s Kapustnica (sauerkraut and sausage soup) came bottom with no votes.
The employees surveyed represented 108 nationalities.
Amazon employee Ivanna Mykhalchuk said: “I love kebabs, I think they’re a deserved winner. I much prefer a chicken one over lamb but it’s a delicious meal. And it’s probably a better dish to watch football with as I’m sure beans on toast could get quite messy!”
But when it comes to the dish voted second place, the 28-year-old Ukrainian said “I just don’t get beans on toast”
“I’d never tried it before, I’d only heard about it and I’ll be honest, it’s not for me. I like toast and I like beans, but beans in a tomato sauce is not right! They’re two things that shouldn’t be eaten together and I will not be eating beans on toast again. In my opinion that tomato sauce is suited for pizza not toast. It makes the bread soggy and changes the taste of the bread.”
The survey was part of Amazon’s Chatterbox series and was launched to complement Amazon’s Euro Food Cup videos – which kick off today with host nation Germany and its currywurst facing Scotland’s haggis. Watch here.
