Angela Rayner slaps down Penny Mordaunt over immigration query

Angela Rayner and Penny Mordaunt have clashed live on-air in a fiery seven-way debate on ITV.

The Tory Commons leader told her: “You’ve had 14 years to come up with some ideas.” But she was shot down by Labour’s deputy leader Angela Rayner, who replied: “You’ve had 14 years in government!” to applause from the audience.

It comes as members of the UK’s biggest political parties faced off in a new seven-way debate on ITV1. Julie Etchingham is moderating as Penny Mordaunt for the Conservative Party, Angela Rayner for Labour Party, Daisy Cooper for the Liberal Democrats, Stephen Flynn for the SNP, Nigel Farage for Reform UK, Carla Denyer for the Greens and Rhun ap Iorwerth for Plaid Cymru take part in a live debate on ITV1.

The debate starts at 8.30pm and ends at 10.10pm. The Mirror is providing live coverage on our General Election live blog.

Over on BBC One, Fiona Bruce is hosting this week’s edition of the long-running Question Time show. It starts at 8pm and ends at 9pm, so there’s a small schedule clash with the ITV debate.

On the panel are the Scottish National Party’s Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes MSP, the Leader of the Conservatives in Scotland Douglas Ross MSP, the Leader of Scottish Labour Anas Sarwar MSP, the chief strategist behind the 2014 campaign for Scottish independence Stephen Noon and the former UK Government adviser Iain Anderson.
