‘I’m consuming a beer from each Euros crew – here is what I’m most enthusiastic about’

A bloke drinking a beer from every country playing in the Euros has revealed the one he’s most excited to neck.

Gus Hully, 37, drinks each beer when a team gets knocked out or wins – and he’s revealed the one he can’t wait to put away. An analyst in the music industry, Gus lives in London and uses expert tactics to source his hard-to-find tipples from around the continent.

Some of of them can be almost impossible to buy in the UK, and so uses a network of contacts to trade with fellow beer enthusiasts. One beer, however, is getting him hot under the collar – Scotland.

“I’m really looking forward to drinking the Scottish one, the Iron Brew from Vault City – I quite like Iron Bru so I’m well looking forward to that. Proper orange, looks like the real thing, tastes almost like the real thing.

The Cheltenham Town fan says he drinks each beer when a team gets knocked out – “Obviously I want to drink the English one last.

“The end of the group stages can get a bit hairy, six in one go,” he admitted. “The end of matchday three is hangover time.

“I buy one can or one bottle per country – I don’t think I’d be able to afford anything else.”

What started off as a laugh has now morphed into something bigger. “It’s becoming a tradition, whenever an international tournament comes about I’ve got to step up and get all the beer for it.”

He’s a “beer collector without a doubt. I’m trying to get a beer from every country in the world. It started off trying to get Euro beers and it developed.”

He continued: “I live in London, so that’s helpful for things like Balkan shops and random restaurants you can pick beer up at, but for places like Slovenia or Albania I’ve had to rely on a network of other people to send me something over and then I can send them something back. I traded for Albania and Slovenia for rare English beers they wouldn’t normally get over there.

Cans are also on the menu
Can Southgate’s boys bring it home?

“I’m in a group with a load of other collectors all over Europe and someone’s like ‘has anyone got any beer from Venezuela [for example],’ and you’re like ‘yeah I’ve got a couple of bottles lying around.

“I know where to go for the individual beers and I’ve got a few mates looking out for me.”

And what’s the Bromley by Bow man drinking when England (hopefully) brings it home? None other than Hawkstone beer, a collaboration between Jeremy Clarkson and the Cotswold Brew Co.

“His farm is 20 minutes down the road,” from where he grew up. “I’m pretty sure it’s meant to be quite good.”

Hopes and dreams aside, which beer does Gus think he’ll be drinking last this time around?

“I don’t think we’ll win – probably get knocked out in the quarters. I don’t want it to happen but I think Germany might do it, they seem to be playing well but not really scoring. The French are the strongest team, without a doubt.”
