Kane warns the Three Lions to not underestimate Serbia of their Euros opener

Harry Kane has warned England to underestimate Serbia at their peril.

England kick off their Euro 2024 campaign with a clash against the Serbs in Gelsenkirchen on Sunday night. Gareth Southgate’s men are red hot favourites to cruise through Group C and go on to win the trophy.

Serbia are ranked 33rd in the world and Dragan Stojkovic’s side will be heavy underdogs against England. But Kane reckons Serbia have the ability to hurt England, and wants his team to show the rivals the ultimate respect.

The England captain said: “They’re a team that can hurt you if you’re not set up correctly, and defensively they’re really strong. They make it difficult for us with their moves, and they have tall players, so they can be very dangerous.

“If we’re not careful it could be a difficult game for us, so we need to make sure we get that right.” Kane, meanwhile, has revealed his nerves are building ahead of the opening game.

But he reckons England have more than enough talent to go on and end the long wait for a major trophy.

The Bayern Munich striker added: “I’m excited. But as the days go by you get a bit nervous, the preparation starts and when you see the first game, Germany against Scotland, that’s when it really starts.

“We are a team that has never won a EURO, so we are trying to make history here. It is a goal we want to achieve, but we know it will be a long, hard road.

“We have to make sure we do everything right, because if you are not 100 percent in these tournaments, you can be punished. This squad is one of the best, if not the best, we’ve ever had when you look at the form and the respective leagues that many of us have played in.

“We’ve got incredible young talent who are fearless and just want to play.”
