Map reveals how rain will fall throughout the entire nation as we speak

Britain’s miserable start to summer continues as a new map has revealed how rain will fall across the whole country today.

Outbreaks of rain will push northeastwards across the UK throughout the day, accompanied by outbursts in the southwest during the afternoon and rainy spells in the east later in the day.

Temperatures plummeted to 11C in Fylingdales, North Yorkshire, yesterday as Britain continues to see a significantly dreary June.

Despite some sunshine, there has been a chilly start to this year’s meteorological summer, with temperatures below average for the time of year.

Rebekah Sherwin, deputy chief meteorologist at the Met Office, said: ‘The forecast suggests no strong signal for temperatures to get above average.’

It comes as bizarre weather has spread across Europe – with Spanish resorts hit by floods while Athens in Greece has been experiencing extreme temperatures of 43C.

Torrential rain has caused chaos in Majorca and Costa Blanca, with Palma’s airport submerged as rain flooded its buildings.

Meanwhile, schools in Greece were closed and Red Cross medics gave out 12,000 free bottles of water.

Last year Greece saw some of the most severe wildfires in living memory, with thousands of Brits fleeing Rhodes to escape the flames.

Turkey is also seeing air temperatures soar eight to 12 degrees above seasonal norms.

Hundreds of firefighters in France have been battling a powerful blaze to the north of Saint-Tropez which has caught crews off-guard.

But images on Tuesday showed Palma’s airport paralysed by floodwater, forcing the cancellation of more than 100 flights, while towns and cities in eastern Spain, including Murcia, were brought to a standstill as roads turned into rivers.

The weather extremes come as many Brits are planning to jet off to Europe for sunnier climes, and to escape what has been a deeply disappointing spring.

As parts of Europe swelter in the heat, temperatures in the UK have been consistently three to five degrees below the seasonal average – a trend which is expected to continue into July – while thundery showers are projected this week.

Meteorologists have blamed the low temperatures on the mid-Atlantic jet stream, a fast-moving atmospheric wind that is blowing cold air south from the Arctic.
