The Thick of It creator set to be honoured in King’s Birthday honours

The Thick Of It creator Armando Iannucci is set to be honoured in the King’s Birthday honours alongside Gordon Brown and the boss of HMRC. 

The Scottish writer is expected to have his OBE upgraded to a CBE for his services to film and TV, sources told The Times. 

Iannucci is best known his his creation of the BBC comedy series The Thick Of It, which satirises the inner workings of modern British government. 

The King’s honours list is set to be released on Friday, while preparations are also happening for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak‘s ‘dissolution honours’ list following his decision to call the general election. 

Those set to receive gongs from Buckingham Palace include former Prime Minister Mr Brown, who reportedly tipped to be made a Companion of Honour.

Jim Harra (pictured), who runs HMRC and was this year slammed for the decision to close its customer helpline, will also be made a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath

The former PM’s work since stepping away from Downing Street has included the making of The Office of Gordon and Sarah Brown, which has given more than £4million to good causes. Many of the causes have been children’s charities. 

Jim Harra, who runs HMRC and was slammed for the decision to close its customer helpline for part of this year, will also be made a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath, The Times reported.  

The inclusion of the honours for Iannucci may come as a pleasant surprise for fans of his popular TV show. 

The writer and satirist was given an OBE in 2012 – the year The Thick Of It aired its last episode. 

He then created a spin-off film called In the Loop, diverting his attention to the US.
