Brits use sizzling water bottles and electrical blankets in summer time as temps fall to 7C

Freezing Brits are using hot water bottles and electric blankets to stay warm as summer feels like winter.

Many have also resorted to putting on the heating and lighting their fires as forecasters warning of more rain and chilly spells to come.

This time last year the country was basking in a heatwave with temperatures soaring into the 30Cs. The mercury even hit a sweltering 32C in London on June 11 last year.

But thermometers hit just 7C overnight in Edinburgh. Fed-up folk have been discussing the grim summer on Reddit as the nation shivers. One wrote: “Love using my hot water bottles in June…Anyone else?”

Another said: “I’m getting closer to turning the heating back on as my hands and nose are getting ridiculously cold. To me, it’s starting to feel like mid-January.”

And a third chilly poster put: “Typing this from underneath my heated blanket, about to put on my ski jacket to go to work.”

The miserable June has been blamed on a “keen northerly wind” pulling arctic air here, bringing possible daytime single-digit temperatures with it.

Meanwhile, the Met Office explained why temperatures are are currently around half of what they were this time last year. They reckon that a “keen northerly wind” is to blame which is pulling arctic air south down to the UK.

Alex Deakin, meteorologist and weather forecaster for the Met Office, blamed the jet stream. He said that “it does feel chilly” even though there is “reasonably powerful June sunshine”.

He continued: “When the air is coming down from the north there’s no surprise that there’s a bit of a chill in the air. You’ve probably noticed that over the past couple of days it has been a fairly fresh feeling, despite some decent spells of sunshine.” Read the full story here.
