Meghan Markle’s one-word Trooping the Colour joke left Kate Middleton fuming

Meghan Markle left Kate Middleton enraged with a one-word joke at her first Trooping the Colour, according to Prince Harry.

The Duchess of Sussex attempted to bring some humour to the event in 2018, which took place just three weeks after she and Harry tied the knot. But in his bombshell 2023 memoir, Spare, Harry revealed the comment, made to Kate, was met with a harsh “yawning silence”.

When the now-Princess of Wales asked her new family member what she thought of her inaugural Trooping the Colour, Meghan responded: “Colourful.” And, according to the Duke, this was not met with the reaction his wife had hoped. “A yawning silence threatened to swallow us all whole,” he revealed in his debut autobiography.

Crowds of spectators gathered on that day to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s official birthday, just as they have for today’s (Saturday, June 15) festivities. This will be King Charles’ second time taking centre stage at the event since his mother passed away in 2022, and the first since he was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year.

Harry and Meghan previously confirmed they would not be attending this year’s Trooping the Colour. Kate Middleton was also expected not to make an appearance, but she has since been pictured arriving at the event after confirming she would attend on Friday (June 14), the Daily Star previously reported.

In the interview Kate said she is making “good progress” but is “not out of the woods yet” and is still undergoing preventative chemotherapy. However, it was revealed the future Queen is “doing well” and “very much looking forward to being with her family” today.

She said in a personal message: “I have been blown away by all the kind messages of support and encouragement over the last couple of months.

“It really has made the world of difference to William and me and has helped us both through some of the harder times.

“I am making good progress, but as anyone going through chemotherapy will know, there are good days and bad days.

“On those bad days you feel weak, tired and you have to give in to your body resting.

“But on the good days, when you feel stronger, you want to make the most of feeling well. My treatment is ongoing and will be for a few more months.”
