Southgate’s future is already determined — even when the Three Lions flop at Euros

Gareth Southgate won’t be sacked – even if England flop at the Euros this summer.

Southgate admits he could be axed if the Three Lions don’t win Euro 2024 in Germany. He reckons this could be his last shot at winning a trophy, and that his future will be decided for him if he doesn’t succeed.

But it’s understood the FA have no intention of dismissing Southgate, whatever happens at the finals. Southgate has too much credit left in the bank, having led England to a World Cup semi final and the final of the last Euros.

It means the Three Lions could fail to reach the knockout stages, but Southgate would still be safe. FA chief executive Mark Bullingham is expecting England to have another successful tournament – and is desperate for Southgate to sign a new deal.

Southgate’s current contract runs out in December, and the FA want him to stay on and lead England to the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The only way Southgate will leave his position is if he decides to step down following the tournament. England are the bookies favourites to conquer Europe in the coming weeks.

Southgate, who is a target of Manchester United and would like a top club job in the near future, would consider anything less than winning the trophy a failure.

He is also wary of England supporters becoming tired of him being in charge, despite his achievements since taking over in 2016.

The Three Lions are in Group C alongside Serbia, Denmark and Slovenia and open their campaign against the Serbs in Gelsenkirchen on Sunday night.
