More than a million workers are likely to phone in ill tomorrow (Monday, June 17), with others turning up late eight million working from home to keep out of their bosses’ sight, HR experts predict.

BrightHR, which monitors absence among over a million employees at over 50,000 UK companies, projected a repeat of the 128% sickness increase the day after England’s Euro 2024 Sunday group game.

Alan Price, CEO at BrightHR, said: “England fans are preparing to nurse sore heads following the Serbia match, with ‘Hangover Monday’ on the way.

“Businesses should brace for a wave of questionable sick leave submissions, unexpected absences, lateness and last-minute holiday requests. Some staff members will show up late and more will work from home, with footy fever the culprit.”

A WFH (working from home) scramble will also see a bumper quarter of Britain’s 32 million labour force work from the kitchen table, while annual leave has doubled compared to last Monday, the analysts’ data showed. A whopping 14million pints were predicted to be drunk in pubs on Sunday and another 16million more at home, according to British Beer and Pub Association beer consumption data trends covering pubs and supermarkets.
