England followers stranded for hours after Serbia recreation as they slam ‘shame’

English football fans were left stranded in Gelsenkirchen until the early hours of the morning.

The Three Lions roared into action on Sunday evening, with an early goal from Jude Bellingham separating the two sides at the Veltins-Arena. However, there was chaos after the final whistle as fans tried to leave Schalke 04’s ground.

Images started to do the rounds on social media of massive queues heading into the one tram stop outside the stadium. According to the Belfast Telegraph, one steward was apologising to fans for the ‘disgrace’ that had left young children in tears.

“Gelsenkirchen a total disaster – took nearly 3 hours to get a tram and cover the 7km back to main train station. A 60,000-seater stadium served by 400-person trams going every 15 mins,” one fan fumed. While a second said: “One of the worst organised events I’ve ever been too!”

“A lot of credit to the public for not losing the plot. So much heat on fan behaviour for that game,” a third vented. And another added: “It was a shambles. Germany seems surprised to find itself hosting a tournament!”

English fans missed onward transport to other German cities

Some fans on social media reported not making it home until almost 3am, while more missed final modes of transport to other German cities as a result of the queues.

It was alleged the tram that took fans back to the city centre only had three carriages, despite having a platform that could house twice that, and ran every 15 minutes.

Other fans noted the gap between the tram and the platform was also unacceptable.

It was far from a vintage display from the Three Lions on Sunday evening – but Gareth Southgate’s side escaped their opening Euro 2024 clash with all three points.

Serbia grew into the game after Bellingham broke the deadlock in the 13th minute. And Jordan Pickford was forced into action from Juventus’ star man Dusan Vlahovic on a couple of occassions.

England now face Denmark on Thursday evening, before their final group stage clash with Slovenia.
