Hungary striker lampooned on social media responds to memes with defiant message

Hungarian football star Martin Adam given a five-word response to the memes swarming social media following his Euro 2024 appearance.

The 29-year-old goal-hunter, who plies his trade in South Korea for Ulsan HD, was the target of unending jests after his 79th-minute sub-in during Hungary’s Euro 2024 kick-off against Switzerland on Saturday, which centred around his build and height. Media reports pegging him at 6ft3 and 87kg sparked comments labelling him an ‘absolute unit’, while others crudely quipped about his apparent appetitive for goals.

Considering the aftermath of his Euro 2024 spectacle, Adam addressed his online teasing, retorting with a concise five-word response. He mentioned: “Of course one or two get back to me, usually I have a good laugh,” then followed with his sharp, five-word comeback: “I was born like this.”

He went on to say: “This is my body shape. I can’t say I was this size when I was born, I can’t change that, I can’t change genetics. So yeah, that’s all I can say about it.”

Hungary started off on the wrong foot in the tournament, succumbing to Switzerland 3-1 over the weekend, courtesy of Kwadwo Duah’s early 12th-minute curtain raiser.

Michel Aebischer doubled Switzerland’s lead on the 45th minute, before Barnabas Varga gave Hungary a glimmer of hope with 66 minutes on the clock. However, a last-minute goal from Breel Embolo sent the Hungarians back to camp empty handed.

Hungary will next face Germany at the MHPArena on Wednesday, with their tournament-hosting opponents sitting comfortably top of Group A after a 5-1 thrashing of a ten-man Scotland in the opening game of the competition. Adam rose through the youth ranks of Vasas SC in 2012, before spending seven years with the side.

He netted 27 times in 139 appearances for the club before moving onto Kaposvar in 2019. He would join Paks the following year, before signing for Ulsan HD in 2022, where he currently has 17 goals in 54 appearances.
